Abstract

Dexamethasone is a synthetic corticosteroid which has broad-spectrum indication and is often used to treat chemotherapy
related nausea and vomiting. Although known to be well-tolerated with short-term use, patients experience various adverse reactions after taking dexamethasone. Hiccup is one of the unrecognized adverse reaction which occurs with other chronic or acute conditions. It usually resolves spontaneously but can be debilitating with significant impact on quality of life. In this case report we report a 61-year-old male patient who experienced hiccups after dexamethasone
administration. The patient was hospitalized for gamma knife surgery for metastatic brain lesion of non-small cell lung
cancer and given five courses of dexamethasone injection. Hiccup developed 34 hours after taking the first loading dose
and featured repetitive occurrence and resolution after use of dexamethasone and treatment with baclofen and
metoclopramide. Patients as well as medical personnel should be aware that hiccup may occur after high dose of dexamethasone to minimize unintended discomfort.
